“The four most expensive words in the English language are ‘This time it’s different’”
John Templeton (1912-2008) was an American-born British investment advisor who believed in financial trends and cycles. He is credited with saying (by at least 1993): “The four most expensive words in the English language are ‘This time it’s different.’” (Also called “the four most dangerous words in the English language.”)
By ignoring “this time it’s different,” Templeton sought to avoid panic selling and frenzied buying, choosing instead to wait for the financial cycle to turn again.

The next year will be tough. The late Sir John Templeton, a stock market guru, once quipped that the four most dangerous words in the investment lexicon were ‘this time it’s different’. Now we have to get our heads around the implications of a still more alarming proposition: next time it’s different.
