Lucille Roberts is truly living the American dream. Her dramatic life story—with its roots on Ellis Island—is fulfilled with the rebirth of Lucille Roberts as a captain in the $5 billion health and fitness industry.

As a child, Roberts and her family adopted the United States as their homeland after fleeing Russia. Adhering to the strong work and family values her immigrant family impressed upon her, Roberts has triumphed in both her personal and professional life.

Founder and Director of one of the largest women's health club chains, Lucille Roberts has succeeded in turning her passion for fitness and nutrition into a multi-million dollar empire serving hundreds of thousands of women daily.

In her early twenties, Roberts rapidly worked her way up in the retail industry, soon becoming the only female sales executive in a chain of major department stores. Young and ambitious, Roberts was shocked when the company reneged on a contract that promised her a significant raise for increased sales—a goal that she had met and even surpassed. Disappointed and humiliated, Roberts quit that day.

With all her energy, and more time on her hands, Roberts became very active at the local health club she already viewed as a refuge. Soon she found her calling and was teaching classes, her passion for health and nutrition, and her knowledge of sales and marketing, Roberts was ready to begin her own retail business—in fitness. In 1970, after seeking the advice and expertise of physicians, dietitians, and fitness specialists, the first Lucille Roberts Health Club was born.

Located on 34th Street, directly across from New York's famed Macy's Department Store, the first Lucille Roberts Health Club was completely unique in its approach, providing affordable, professional and luxurious exercise and weight control programs exclusively for women. Leading the fitness revolution, Lucille Roberts set a standard that has allowed her business to expand to over 50 health clubs with over 450 employees.

Roberts' savvy business philosophy has catapulted Lucille Roberts Health Clubs to a $30 million empire. Having completed Harvard Business School's Owner/Management Program, Roberts is actively involved in all aspects of her corporation, from financing to location to staffing and motivating. Her health clubs are continuously ranked #1 by regional publications and in the top 15 nationally. And now Lucille Roberts is about to embark on a major expansion plan.

At home, Lucille Roberts has had the full support of her husband and, with the help of her mother, remained devoted to the upbringing of her two sons. Her commitment to family and business is the reason her employees and clients feel the club reflects a family atmosphere. Since the early 70's, Lucille Roberts has been bringing her children to work, an idea recently embraced by corporate America. She also offered day care at her health clubs long before it became fashionable.

Lucille Roberts' dedication to the betterment of women extends into her personal life as well. She is a member of such business organizations as The Women Business Owners of New York, The American Women's Economic Development Association, and the Women Alumnae of Harvard Business School, of which she is a founding member. She is an active member of her community, participating in many fundraising organizations, acting as a mentor in Big Sisters of New York, and working with the Mayor's office to offer academic credit to high school students working in her clubs.

Roberts has been honored with the award of New York Woman of the Year and is one of the few women to become a member of the Young President's Organization. She is the author of two books, COMPUTERCISE (Simon and Schuster, NY) and THE LUCILLE ROBERTS 14 DAY MAKEOVER (Ventura Books, NY). She has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Newsday, Cosmopolitan, and Ladies Home Journal; she has been on television shows from ABC News to Regis and Kathy-Lee, CNBC and numerous other TV shows.

In the 32nd year of her health clubs, Lucille Roberts' passion goes into every single Lucille Roberts Health Club that bears her name.
