Febrewary (February + brew)

Some people put the “brew” in “February” and spell it “febrewary.” “October is the great time for brewing ale, we believe, but we should have thought ‘Febrewary’ was a month positively made for such a purpose” was printed in the Liverpool (UK) Mercury on August 6, 1880.

AS HE WOKE with a headache and looked the New Year in the face, Chuck Barnett decided this was going to be quite a drinking year. For as he thumbed the calendar, he saw things like this: “Jaguary, Febrewary, Parch, Aprale, May-wine, Gin, Julip, Augqavit, Sipped-amber, Hictober, Novocaine and Decembeer.”

Not only that but all his trouble started the night of the thirsty-first.

To support craft beer industry, Gov. Hogan renames month ‘FeBREWary’
By Wesley Case
FEBRUARY 1, 2016, 4:25 PM
In an effort to promote Maryland’s craft beer industry, which has more than 50 breweries operating and more to come, Gov. Larry Hogan has proclaimed this month “FeBREWary.” Events featuring beers from state breweries are scheduled to take place all month long.

While the relatively mild weather of spring, summer and fall works well for beer-related festivities, FeBREWary’s organizers — the Maryland Office of Tourism, Brewers Association of Maryland and the promotional website Shore Craft Beer — aimed to create a winter event.

February is for black history, not beer
FEBRUARY 4, 2016, 4:24 PM
In an effort to promote Maryland’s craft beer industry, Gov. Larry Hogan recently proclaimed this month “FeBREWary,” a four-week celebration of beer-related festivities (“To support craft beer industry, Gov. Hogan renames month ‘FeBREWary,’” Feb. 1).

I find this proclamation rather tone deaf, however, given February’s traditional designation as Black History Month.
