WHAT’S WRONG WITH FAT-SHAMING?
Fat-shaming ought to be self-explanatory, but it’s actually kind of tricky to define. Here’s a selection of the fat-shaming I’ve experienced over the years.

Urban Dictionary
fat shaming
A bullying tactic, singling out, or making fun of a fat person, under the guise of helping them realise they need to lose 50 pounds pronto or they’re going to become ill, die prematurely, or be a major burden on the health system, when in actual fact it’s an individual’s bias against people they consider to be unattractive in their immediate social or professional circle.

Making overweight or obese people feel bad about their bodies doesn’t do anything to motivate them to lose weight – actually, a new study finds it does just the opposite.

People who felt discriminated against because of their weight were more likely to either become or stay obese, finds a new report published this week in the journal PLoS ONE.

“Weight discrimination, in addition to being hurtful and demeaning, has real consequences for the individual’s physical health,” says study author Angelina Sutin, a psychologist and assistant professor at the Florida State University College of Medicine in Tallahassee, Fla.

‘Fat-Shaming Week’ Is Horrible, But the Responses to It Are Genius

So apparently, “Fat-Shaming Week” is a thing, a terrible thing for the most obvious reasons, started by a men’s-rights website named Return of Kings.

Created by pickup artist “Roosh V”, the site’s hypermasculine ethos forbids women and gay men from participating in its comments section, and proudly displays articles with titles like, “5 Reasons Fat Girls Don’t Deserve Love” and “Obamacare Just Means More Free Sh** for Women.”

The site’s female-targeted body-shaming campaign was started on Twitter several days ago, with its own handle, @fatshamingweek.
