Explosionism (art of explosions)

Drew Lausman of Lakeland, Florida, had his late brother give him firecracker explosives in 2011. Lausman started creating what he termed “explosionism” paintings.

A story about “explosionism” appeared in January 2013; several other stories appeared in December 2015.

Toothbrushes, sticks, fireworks and tubes of colored paint clutter the ground around two busted-up end tables alongside a dead-end dirt road in Lakeland.

This new feature focusing on up-and-coming artists will alternate with our “Polk Beats” music spotlight.
The artist, clad in heavily splattered cutoff jeans, hovers over a blank black canvas, searching for the perfect place to start.

A flame caresses the fuse of a small, paint-dripped firecracker taped to the end of a stick and seconds later a blast of green strikes the canvas. With that, Andrew Lausman, 24, has begun working on a new piece in a genre of art he has coined “explosionism.”

Drew Lausman from Lakeland, Florida, claims to have created a new genre of art called “Explosionism.”

The process includes dipping Dowel rods in paint, taping on a firecracker, and lighting it over a spray paint- covered canvas. The results are paintings that look like stunning landscapes and far away galaxies.

LAKELAND (FOX 13) - Drew Lausman is making a lot of noise with his art, literally. He is taking firecrackers, dipping them in paint, and then letting them blow. It’s called “Explosionism,” a name and a form of art he coined himself.

“I make art with fireworks,” says Lausman. “I still blow myself away sometimes. I’ve done 200 paintings in four years.”
