“Eat at a local restaurant tonight. Get the cream sauce. Have a cold pint at 4 o’clock in a mostly empty bar…”

A popular quotation has been credited to American celebrity chef, author, and travel documentarian. Anthony Bourdain (1956-2018):

“Eat at a local restaurant tonight. Get the cream sauce. Have a cold pint at 4 o’clock in a mostly empty bar. Go somewhere you’ve never been. Listen to someone you think may have nothing in common with you. Order the steak rare. Eat an oyster. Have a Negroni. Have two. Be open to a world where you may not understand or agree with the person next to you, but have a drink with them anyways. Eat slowly. Tip your server. Check in on your friends. Check in on yourself. Enjoy the ride.”

The quotation wa scited on Facebook by Carelyn Hillstrom on June 13, 2018, soon after Anthony Bourdain died. It’s not known if/when Boudain said this. It possibly was said on an episode of his American travel and food show on CNN, Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown (2013-2018).

The “eat at a local restaurant…” quote was written by a fan, not by Bourdain.
On this day we’re all thinking of the great man more than the rest of the days, I’d like to clarify the mystery of that quote so many people attributes to AB and that I’ve seen posted over and over on days like this. He never said it.

On the day of his death in 2018, a thread was started in the WoodenBoat forum, that thread continued to gather comments over the years. An old user of the forum by the name of “Joe (SoCal)”, posted a number of comments there, this is clearly a fan and someone who has followed Bourdain over the years. On June 27, 2021, a couple of days after “Bourdain day” on the 25th. he posted a comment in that thread, not a quote, but a reflection of things Tony liked and stood for, and that is the first time this paragraph shows up on the internet. It’s an homage from a thoughtful fan. But not something Bourdain ever said himself. As wholesome as the quote is, I don’t think it is fair for such a great writer (and someone who took most pride in being a writer more than anything else) to be remembered for something he never wrote himself.
