“Easy peasy lemon squeezy”

“Easy peasy” and “easy peasy lemon squeezy” both mean something that is very easy. It’s claimed that “easy peasy lemon Sqezy” was cited in 1964-65 print ads in the United Kingdom for Sqezy, a washing liquid. However, UK Press Online and The Guardian/The Observer digital archive do not show early printed citations; the earliest “easy peasy lemon squeezy” is from October 22, 1995 in The Observer.

The Oxford English Dictionary records “Easy-peasy” from 1966. “Easy-peasy-Japanesy” was cited in a 1982 book. “Can do. My specialty. Easy peasy, Japanesey, wash your face in Lemon Squeezy” was cited in a 1983 book.

“When you thought everything would be easy peasy lemon squeezy, but it’s actually difficult difficult lemon difficult” and “When you thought something would be easy peasy lemon squeezy, but it’s actually been stressy, depressy lemon zesty” are related sayings. A similar “easy” saying is “easy as pie.”

HHCL wins £3m Sqezy relaunch
Thu, 4 Jul 2002
Sqezy, the UK’s first washing-up liquid brand, has appointed HHCL & Partners to handle its £3m relaunch, following a competitive pitch against undisclosed agencies.

The relaunch will see the 38-year old brand, owned by chemicals company Buck UK, target young consumers in an effort to take on the market leaders, Unilever’s Persil and Procter & Gamble’s Fairy.

Buck UK managing director Gervase Cottam says: “We want to do something different in this market, to create a brand with a significant premium to the leader. Sqezy is designed to appeal to the young-at-heart.” The brand first appeared on the shelves in 1964 as “easy peasy lemon sqezy” washing up liquid.
