Drinktator (drink + dictator)
Bars were closed and struggled to survive during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo re-opened New York in stages, ruling that restaurants could open for outdoor dining—and only dining. “Outdoor dining is now permitted statewide. Outside drinking is not,” Cuomo tweeted on July 21, 2020.
“‘Outdoor dining is now permitted statewide. Outside drinking is not,’ the drinktator tweeted Tuesday” was printed in the New York (NY) Post on July 22, 2020, in the story “Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s new bar rules are killing NYC businesses” by Kelly Jane Torrance.
The next day, July 23, 2020, the New York (NY) Post front page headline was:
“DRINKTATOR
Generalissimo Cuomo orders us to buy food (not just chips!) at bars”
“Drinktator” (drink + dictator) is a portmanteau word that had been infrequently used before. “You’re a drinktator!” was posted on Twitter by kk on September 3, 2011. “#drinktator” was posted on Twitter by Brad Mandic on November 9, 2012. “Editorial Cartoon: ‘Tyrannical Drinktator’ http://onion.com/22m13cr” was posted on Twitter by The Onion on May 23, 2016.
“Drinktator” is also the name of a Canadian drinks website, owner of a Facebook page with posts in 2017.
“Cuomo Chips” (chips that allow bars to stay open under New York Governor Cuomo’s rules) is a related term.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s new bar rules are killing NYC businesses
By Kelly Jane Torrance July 22, 2020 | 9:42pm
New York City this June had at most 40 percent of the food service and bar jobs it had last June — and Gov. Andrew Cuomo seems intent on killing off more with his dictatorial decree that bar patrons can’t drink without dining.
“Outdoor dining is now permitted statewide. Outside drinking is not,” the drinktator tweeted Tuesday.
Actually, bars have been permitted to serve seated patrons outside since June 22. And it hasn’t proven harmful: The number of New York’s coronavirus cases continues to drop, with not a single person reported dying of the disease on Monday. But King Cuomo has seen images of a few crowded outdoor bars and made another last-minute ruling from the throne that threatens even more damage to an industry struggling simply to survive.

A patron can’t even sit down and enjoy a cold one while waiting for a to-go order of food. The gov apparently prefers the patron stand in the street.

Gov. Cuomo defends food-with-drink mandate, saying law has always existed
By Bernadette Hogan and Lia Eustachewich July 23, 2020 | 3:27pm | Updated
Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday defended his strict food-with-drinks requirement as a way to quell curbside boozing, saying the rule has always existed — as state law.
“There is no bar that only serves alcohol,” Cuomo said at a press conference at his Manhattan office Thursday when asked about The Post front page story that labeled him “Drinktator” for his edict that a bar patron must order a food dish if they want to drink.

There was confusion today over whether Gov. Cuomo said chicken wings satisfied his food requirement. Is there any question he is, as the @nypost cover and my column today called him, a drinktator? https://nypost.com/2020/07/22/gov-andrew-cuomos-new-bar-rules-are-killing-nyc-businesses/

Earlier today, Governor Cuomo said chicken wings are not substantial food for bars to be allowed to sell alcohol. He added that sandwiches were the “lowest level” of substantive food. #Buffalo His comments:
