“‘Dress for the job that you want’ is bad advice for aspiring police officers”

“Dress for the job you want, not for the job you have” is an employment adage. However, if one wants to become a police officer, then impersonating a police officer is a criminal offense.

“People will tell you, ‘Dress for the job you want’…what they fail to mention is that sometimes it’s called, ‘Impersonating a police officer’” was posted on Twitter on April 12, 2010. “‘Dress for the job you want, not for the job you have’ is terrible advice if you want to be a police officer. Or a stripper” was posted on Reddit—Shower Thoughts on December 9, 2015.

“Dress for the job you want” doesn’t really work when you want to be a police officer.

It turns out that the maxim “Dress For The Job You Want” doesn’t work. I’ve been charged with impersonating a police officer.

“Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.” Unless you want to join the police or the military. Then it’s a felony.

It’s a bad advise in general. Applies only when you’re going to a job interview.
No one is gonna come up to you on the street and offer you a job, just because you’re a construction worker wearing business attire in your free time
