Double Wonder or Double Wonders (Chinese dish of chicken and shrimp)

“Double Wonder” (or “Double Wonders”) is a Chinese-American restaurant dish featuring two main ingredients—usually chicken and shrimp. “Double Wonders came as an exquisite blend of prawns, chicken and Chinese vegetables in a hot, juicy sauce” was printed in the New York (NY) Times on February 4, 1979. “Double Wonders, which are deep-fried shrimp and scallops” was printed in The Advocate (Stamford, CT) on January 20, 1982. “DOUBLE WONDER Sliced prawns and tender morsels of chicken marinated in a succulent sauce, then sauteed with a variety of Chinese vegetables, and delicately seasoned in hot sauce” was printed in the Sun-Sentinel (Fort Lauderdale, FL) on May 31, 1985.

Similar Chinese combination dishes include “Dragon and Phoenix,” “Three Musketeers,” “Triple Crown,”  “Triple Delight,” “Triple Harvest,” “Four Precious Jewels,” “Four Seasons,” “Hawaii Four-O,” “Hawaii Five-O,” “Happy Family” and “Happy Together.”

The most visually spectacular dish, unfortunately, is one of the most flawed. Called double wonders, it looks like a centerpiece at a Chinese state banquet, with piles of sienna-colored spicy chicken and pristine white lobster arranged around the bright orange lobster shell that sits upright like a statue. The chicken is delicious, but the lobster tastes limp and watery.

We also loved the browned potstickers, and the “double wonder,” with shrimp and vegetables in wine sauce on one side, and chicken spiked with red pepper on the other.
