Sorting thru dried beans for rocks is fine. Having to do it with a large quanity of French lentils is an exercise in wanton cruelty.

YES.  I still check the dried beans for rocks and spoiled beans and then rinse them in hot water to make sure the dirt is all off before putting them in the pot to cook.
