“Diner: Is soup on the menu? Waiter: No, I wiped it off.”

An old restaurant joke about something “on the menu” is:

Customer: “Is there any soup on the menu today?”
Waiter: “There was, sir, but I just wiped it off.”

The joke was cited in the New York City humor magazine Life in 1921. Many foods—besides soup—have been used in the joke.

“The menu had many different kinds of food on it. So I asked, ‘Can I have a clean one?‘“ is a similar menu joke. “A new restaurant in my neighborhood offers a tasting menu, but it just tasted like paper to me” is a related joke.
