Dimocrat (dim + Democrat)

“Dimocrat” (dim + Democrat, also lowercase “dimocrat”) is a derogatory nickname for a member of the Democrat party. “Dimocrat” is cited in print since at least June 2000.

Seba Smith (1792-1868) wrote newspaper stories and books using a comic character named Major Jack Downing, of Downingville, Maine. Smith used vernacular spellings for words, including “dimocrat” for “Democrat.” The name “dimocrat” appeared in Major Jack Downing newspaper articles since August 1833; “dimocrat” was also used in the vernacular writings of other authors in the 19th century.

Seba Smith (September 14, 1792 - July 28, 1868) was an American humorist and writer. He was married to Elizabeth Oakes (Prince) Smith, also a major writer and feminist.

Born in Buckfield, Maine, Smith graduated from Bowdoin College in 1818 and then lived in Portland, Maine. He edited various papers including the Eastern Argus and then founded the Portland Courier and edited it from 1830 to 1837.

He was one of the first writers to use American vernacular in humor. His series with the New England character Major Jack Downing was popular after its start in 1830.

22 August 1833, New Hampshire Sentinel (NH), pg. 3:
Ephraim Downing, of Downingville is out in the Portland Courier. He writes to his cousin Jack for advice. Says he has noticed that republicanism and federalism always keep changing—“and I’ve minded too, it most always keeps going round one way; tha is the young federalists keep turning dimocrats, and the old dimocrats keep urning federalists.”

Pg. 222:
And I’ve minded tu it most always keeps going round one way; that is, the young federalists keep turning dimocrats, and the old dimocrats keep turning federalists. What it’s for I dont exactly know, but that’s the way it goes. I spose a man, on the whole, is n’t hardly fit to be a dimocrat after he gets to be fifty years old. And here is old uncle Joshua in the Post Office, he’s got to be about sixty, and he’s hanging on to the dimocratic side yet, like the tooth-ache; and it begins to worry me a good deal. I think it’s high time he went over. You know Downingville has always been a genuine republican town, and I want it should always go according to he usages [I think that’s what they call it] of the dimocratic party.

With the air of one who was speaking ex cathedra, the very last possible word on the subject, he said, “Take the word ‘Dimocrat, Dim-o-crat, why, the very word tells us of something that is dim, covered up, concealed, while the word Re-pub-li-can tells us of that which is open and above board, published to all the world.”

Subject: Electoral College; DimocRats tampering in the dark?

OK, I maybe paranoid, but I cant help feeling a little uneasy with this. The DimocRats have members who openly admit to trying to tamper with the Republican delegates to the electoral college today. Though the Republicans are taking some steps to insure the loyalty of the electors, flying them in a day early and feeding them, etc, I dont think that this would counter any effective blackmail if the DimocRats had found three members with enough skeletons in the closet to turn them to Gore.

And exactly how would that be different if we had elected a dimocratic ‘regime’?

Why I hate Dimocrats
I’ve had some comments lately by booger eatin’ moh-rons who have read only one of my posts and decided that I advocated one party rule and I was a blind supporter of all Republican policies. Obviously these people have not read very much of my writing. I am a small L libertarian. I usually find myself voting Republican since I hate Dimocrats. I do desire a two party system since one party rule is a bad thing. Unfortunately, I do not want the Dimocrat Party to be one of those parties.

Why I Call Them ‘Dimocrats’
The ‘Dimocrats’ deserve to lose their majorities in the Colorado legislature ... and the governorship, too.

Last month, the Dimocrat majority in the legislature and the Dimocrat governor of this state enacted into law a provision that now places an even greater tax burden on our recession-stressed citizens and small businesses.
