Defeatocrat (defeat + Democrat)
“Defeatocrat” (defeat + Democrat) was coined by conservative columnist Mark Steyn on December 4, 2005. Steyn was writing about how Democrat politicians in the United States seemingly wanted the country to lose its war in Iraq. The December 4th column in the Chicago (IL) Sun-Times was titled “Dems determined to ignore progress in Iraq,” but the same column in the New York (NY) Sun on December 5th was titled “Dance of the Defeaticrats.” Although Steyn had used the spelling “Defeaticrat,” the term was quickly picked up as ‘Defeatocrat.”
“Defeatocrat” is usually capitalized, but frequently is in lowercase.

Dance of the Defeaticrats

Senator Joe Lieberman, Democrat of Connecticut, came out with a big statement on Iraq last week. Did you hear about it? Probably not. Everyone was still raving about his Democrat colleague, Congressman Jack Murtha, whose carefully nuanced position on Iraq is: We’re all doomed unless we pull out by next Tuesday! (I quote from memory.)

The Defeaticrats’ loss of proportion is unworthy of a serious political party in the world’s only superpower. In next week’s election, the Iraqi people will shame them yet again.

Been fighting it all week. I’m losing. While I hack up a lung and dig up that hot toddy recipe someone e-mailed last year, here are a few good reads this morning:
- Alexandra at All Things Beautiful on retreating Dems: “The D stands for defeat.” When you’re done reading that post, keep scrolling down. I love this blog.
- John Hinderaker coins a new term: “Defeatocrats.” It fits. (Update: Whoops. I think the neologism is a Mark Steyn original. Should have guessed!) Ed Morrissey weighs in on the White Flag Dems.

Battlefield report
Commentary by David Reinhard
Less than three years after the start of the Iraq war, Iraqis went to the polls Thursday to elect a parliament. For the third time this year, Saddam Hussein’s former subjects overcame threats of violence to shape their future with the might of the purple finger. Iraqi turnout is the envy of U.S. good-government types. Surely the election is one more sign that progress is being made there and that the Iraq war is, well, winnable.
Clearly, the Iraqis aren’t as gloomy as America’s “Defeatocrats,” to use columnist Mark Steyn’s apt phrase.

Snow: Today’s Democratic Party relies more on plans than on people

It would be easy to portray Jack Murtha, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid or any of the other wheezy prophets of the Defeatocrat Party as oddities were it not for the fact their position on Iraq is deeply consonant with what the Modern Democratic Party has believed for 50 years.
