Don’tcha love that fair-food-on-a-stick thing?  Ohio State Fair just ended, with two new favorites announced; deep fried cookie dough balls, and a big slab of batter fried fudge on a stick!  My teeth hurt just thinking about it.  And Columbus just last year was promoting dieting to get us off the list of one of the fattest cities.  Yikes!

We join our intrepid columnist, who rolls on in search of this year’s ultimate deep-fried fair delight, only to find heartache at the Twinkie stand

If a trainload of sugar were to collide with a trainload of fat in a giant fireball, you’d probably be left with something you could sell at the New Mexico State Fair.

Last year’s “ultimate decadence” was the deep-fried Twinkie. This year, I had to find its successor, something better, as if there could be such a thing.

I had a tip: Someone was selling deep-fried cookie dough.

Fried cookie dough wins as 2007 Texas State Fair’s best-tasting new food creation
By Pegasus News wire
DALLAS — Winners of the “Big Tex Choice Awards” were announced for best-tasting new treat at the 2007 Texas State Fair, which if you haven’t heard will open on September 28. From a field of 7 candidates, the Texas Fried Cookie Dough won the prize for “Best Taste”.

It’s no surprise, coming as it does from veteran concessionaire Abel Gonzales, famous for his ground-breaking fried Twinkie; he wins some kind of trophy every year. His Fried Cookie Dough consists of cookie dough—made from scratch with pecans, chocolate chips and coconut—which is battered and deep fried, emerging warm and gooey, then topped with chocolate syrup or whipped cream.

Deep fried cookie dough tops State Fair food offerings
Associated Press - September 3, 2007 11:16 PM ET
DALLAS (AP) - Oh sure, it sounds like deep-frying cookie dough would be a cinch, but Abel Gonzales says there’s more to it than meets the fryer.

For one thing, Gonzales says the dough has to be made from scratch. Store-bought dough is too sweet, he says. And don’t even get him started on toppings.

All that thought and effort paid off for Gonzales today, though. His deep-fried cookie dough has been named the best-tasting fried food created for the upcoming State Fair of Texas.

It’s the third year in a row Gonzales has been honored. Last year, his fried Coke earned him an appearance on the NBC program “Today” and was mimicked by fry cooks at other state fairs.

One gooey specialty this year is the Texas Fried Cookie Dough. Just think of it…fresh cookie dough, with pecans, chocolate chips and coconut, lightly battered and deep fried.
