Debtberg (debt + iceberg)

“Debtberg” (debt + iceberg) is a reference to the RMS Titanic that hit an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean and sank on April 15, 1912. Like an iceberg, the debt obligations of the future are often unseen, but can sink an economy.  “But that’s just the tip of the debtberg” was cited in Newsweek on February 23, 1998.

The term “debtberg” has been popularized since at least 2001 by George Ure on his website UrbanSurvival.com.

China is in the process of whacking and spanking us (video) on several fronts for our continued excessive spending, but let’s be real:  It’s been a succession of overspending congresses and presidents who stuck us in this hole, and singling out either Geithner or Bernanke should not be the talking point since the Titanic has hit the ice in the form of what I’ve written about for years:  The Debtberg.

Very soon I believe we’ll experience a crisis that’s bigger than the Internet bubble… the housing bubble… or the credit crisis of 2008.

It’s an event that I call “Debt-berg.”
