“Cubicle sweet cubicle”

“Cubicle sweet cubicle” is a work saying that has been printed on many images. The saying is based on the song “Home Sweet Home” that John Howard Payne (1791-1852) wrote for the opera Clari, the Maid of Milan (1823).

“Cubicle Sweet Cubicle” was printed in The Oregon Statesman (Salem, OR) on May 25, 1978. The sign is mostly ironic, for who would celebrate working in a cubicle?

Similar work-related sayings include “Home sweet home office,” “Home sweet office” and “Office sweet office.”

Thus, the title of this article — “Cubicle, sweet cubicle” — is a joke, for “relaxing” and “being yourself” would be big mistakes — if not simply impossible — for anybody working in one of these tiny, doorless, low- walled offices.
