“Cricket is basically baseball on Valium”

“Cricket is basically baseball on Valium” is a line attributed to American comedian Robin Williams (1951-2014) at a performance at the London Palladium on December 5, 1987. Williams did not like cricket. The line has been frequently cited, but the actual words are:

“We have baseball. You have cricket, which is like baseball on Valium.”

Williams himself, who was just back from England where he appeared before Prince Charles and Princess Diana on Dec. 5 in a benefit at the London Palladium for the Prince’s Trust (he noted that the prince laughed heartily when he described cricket as “baseball on Valium”), was at a loss to explain the connections.
