“Conservatives believe life begins at conception and ends at birth”

Barney Frank, a Democratic Congressman from Massachusetts, said in 1981 that, for the Reagan administration and the Moral Majority, “’life begins at conception and ends at birth.” The line was printed in the New York (NY) Times on August 16, 1981, reporting that Frank said this the week earlier before the American Bar Association.

The Ford Hall Forum at Suffolk University has a transcript of Barney Frank’s remarks on October 4, 1981, when he used the line again:

“The Moral Majority supports legislators who oppose abortions but also oppose child nutrition and day care. From their perspective, life begins at conception and ends at birth.”

As Representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts told the American Bar Association last week, some legislators are defining life all the time, voting not only against abortion funding but against any Federal aid aimed for those who do get born - aid to dependent children, child nutrition, child care, school lunches, shelters for battered kids. As Mr. Frank says, by their definition, ‘‘Life begins at conception and ends at birth.’‘
