“Confidence is going after Moby Dick in a rowboat and taking the tartar sauce with you”
“Confidence is going after Moby Dick in a rowboat and taking the tartar sauce with you” is a jocular saying that has been printed on many images. “Confidence is like going after the whale MOBY DICK with a rowboat, a harpoon & a large jar of tartar sauce” was printed in the Kokomo (IN) Tribune on July 30, 1978.
“An optimistic man is the one who goes after Moby Dick in a rowboat armed only with a jar of tartar sauce” was printed in the Wisconsin State Journal (Madison, WI) on March 28, 1979. “Confidence is going after Moby Dick with a rowboat, a harpoon, and a jar of tartar sauce” was printed in many newspapers (usually as a “daily chuckle”) in April 1979. A rowboat is a very small boat and is ill-suited to capturing the large white whale called “Moby Dick” (the title of an 1851 novel by Herman Melville), but the the fisher is so confident (so much an optimist) that he or she also carries a jar of tartar sauce with which to eat the captured whale.
American author and motivation speaker Zig Ziglar (1926-2012) is credited with the saying and has used it many times, often with slightly different wording.
