Circuit of the Americas (Austin racetrack)

Austin (TX) premiered in November 2012 the first track in the United States built specifically for Formula One racing. The name “Circuit of the Americas” was introduced to the public in April 2011 and is trademarked.
 
San Antonio has its ‘Tower of the Americas,” a 750-foot observation tower/restaurant built for the 1968 HemisFair.

Circuit of the Americas is a 3.427-mile (5.515 km) motor racing circuit near Austin, Texas. It is due to hold the Formula One United States Grand Prix on November 18, 2012, the penultimate round of the 2012 season. The circuit will also host the Texas Motorcycle Grand Prix, a round of the Road Racing World Championship — commonly known as MotoGP — in addition to the Australian V8 Supercars series, the FIA World Endurance Championship, the American Le Mans Series, and the Rolex Sports Car Series, all of which will make their debuts at the circuit in 2013.
 
The circuit and Grand Prix were first proposed in the middle of 2010. The circuit will be the first in the United States to be purpose-built for Formula One.

The Formula 1 race track facility under construction in Elroy now has a name—Circuit of the Americas (COTA).

Tavo Hellmund, the chairman of Formula 1 United States, announced the name as well as several major new partners and programs in connection with the new track Tuesday.

According to a press release about the new facility, the name is to signify “that the center will be a premier destination in the western hemisphere where business leaders, entertainers and sports fans come to see world-class performances.”

On the same day in which it announced the signing of a 10-year agreement to host MotoGP races as well as Formula 1, the United States Grand Prix group responsible for bringing F1 back to the United States in 2012 officially named its Austin facility “Circuit of the Americas” at a media event held to reveal more details of the facility.

Austin annexes Circuit of the Americas racetrack

In a deal that adds tens of millions of dollars to the property tax rolls, the Austin City Council on Thursday unanimously approved annexing about 1,500 acres in southeastern Travis County that include Circuit of the Americas.
 
The annexation also extends the city’s regulatory authority on the 3.4-mile racetrack, which is scheduled to host its first Formula One race Nov. 16-18.
 
The circuit property was valued at $92.2 million this year, with a taxable value of $80.7 million, records show. Annexation will take effect Dec. 17.
