CBO (cheddar-bacon-onion sandwich)

McDonald’s fast food restaurants introduced the “CBO” (cheddar-bacon-onion) sandwich in 2012. The sandwich can be made with either meat or chicken.  The “CBO” was introduced overseas in 2008, when the letters stood for “chicken-bacon-onion.” McDonald’s has trademarked “CBO.”

Three-letter sandwich names have been popular since the BLT (bacon-lettuce-tomato) sandwich. However, the initials can cause confusion. “CBO” already stands for Congressional Budget Office. Several similar initials have nothing to do with food, such as CAO (Chief Administrative Officer), CEO (Chief Executive Officer) and CFO (Chief Financial Officer).

Talking about burgers, Just finished off a small portion of microwaved frozen CBO burger (chicken bacon onion) from McD Paris. Not so nice when frozen, best eaten fresh.

Speaking of bizarre fast-food commercials, MCDONALD’S unleashed a doozy in the Czech Republic that showed the acronymous elements of the CBO sandwich (chicken, bacon and onions) defending a cityscape against an aerial assault from killer watermelons.

And right now, there are a lot of eyes on McDonald’s latest limited-time offering, the Cheddar Bacon Onion — or CBO.

McDonald’s CEO Don Thompson explained on a call with analysts:

“We’re balancing our value messaging with premium menu news, including this month’s introduction of the Cheddar Bacon Onion sandwich, which is made with hickory-smoked bacon white cheddar cheese, caramelized grilled onions and creamy mustard sauce on top of a grilled or crispy chicken patty, or our Angus beef patty. The CBO as we like to call it was inspired by a similar entry in Europe.

“This is the first time we’ve offered one sandwich with a choice of chicken or beef in the U.S. and we’ve seen that both have a high rate of extra value mill conversion and average check increase in our test markets.”
