“Call them ‘Armadillos’ because the team gets killed on the road”
Many sports team don’t play very well on the road. Many animals get killed on the road. A joke began in 1991 that a team was going to change its name to the Possums because “they play dead at home and get killed on the road.”
The joke has been popular in Texas (where “armadillo” often replaces “possum”) and in other southern states.

Actually, all the Texas teams make sense. Houston’s Rockets (aerospace capital at one time); the Spurs (West Texas; Duh); and the Mavericks. (Although they were very nearly re-named “The Armadillos” just because they always got killed on the road.)

Added the Astros to my list last night. They did what they were supposed to do (lose to the Padres).
We’re changing our name from the Astros to the Armadillos, because we play dead at home and get killed on the road. :(
