BTFD (Buy The Fucking Dip)
“Buy the dip” means that a trader should buy when there is a “dip” (or decline) in a stock’s price. The theory is that, in a highly violatile market, the price will go back up again.
A popular YouTube video of November 15, 2010 titled “buy the dip” featured a cartoon character (with a broccoli design on his superhero cape!) telling another character to “Buy the fucking dip!” The initials “BTFD” were used by at least the first week in December, when a sequel YouTube video, “BTFD II: Revenge of the dips,” was posted.
“STFR” (Sell The Fucking Rip; Sell The Fucking Rally) was coined in January 2011. This theory holds that if the price of an asset rises, then it’s time to sell.
“BTFATH” (Buy The Fucking All Time High) was coined in July 2013. This theory holds that if the price of an asset rises to an all time high, one should buy more because the price will to continue to go up.
“BTFWWIII” (Buy The Fucking World War III) was coined by the Zero Hedge blog on Twitter on March 2, 2014. The United States and Russia were both causing civil unrest in Ukraine, possibly leading to World War III. All of the jocular investment strategies poke fun at a stock market that is seemingly manipulated by fiat money printing.

No POMO, No Follow-through, BTFD
For the uninitiated, BTFD is an acronym for Buy The F—-ing Dip, as relates to stocks in the Bernanke free-money era in which we are currently ensconced. Today’s dip, though not great, may be yet another buying opportunity for the momentum-chasers still convinced that buying stocks presents the best profit potential with limits to the downside.
