Breed Profile
The Brooklyn Wooley is an experimental rex breed in its early days. Sarah Sweet, a breeder of Siamese cats from Brooklyn, New York, had an unusual kitten in one of her litters. She named the kitten Wooley because of his unique rex coat which was rather coarse, wiry and curly with a distinctive parting down the back. Breeding demonstrated that this was a dominant gene and after the involvement of the chair of the TICA genetics committee, Dr Solveig Pflueger, it was concluded that this was most likely a new genetic mutation.

What's a Brooklyn Wooley?? Well, it's the newest rex (curly-haired) breed of cat. It's not a "designer" breed or man-made
creation - it's truly a new naturally occurring breed created
through a genetic spontaneous mutation, as verified by a top feline geneticist. Upon her guidance, we are currently working on increasing the gene pool and attempting to get more Brooklyn Wooleys. In order to do this, we are outcrossing (mixing) our Brooklyn Wooleys with other breeds. This outcrossing produces some kittens with straight hair that can't be used for our breeding program, so are available to pet homes.

I have a male cat named Sparky after one of Rygel's many nicknames... He's black smoke and white and he's a new rex breed called a Brooklyn Wooley. His hair is all wiry, curly, and coarse... so the name Sparky really suits him. His personality lives up to his name too!
