LONDON, Jan. 15 - Bringing together Brooklyn chewing gum and Mentos mints, the Italian confectioner Perfetti S.p.A. said today that it would buy the two-thirds of Can Melle N.V. that it does not already own, in a deal that values the company at $1 billion.

Perfetti got its start in 1946, when two brothers, Ambrogio and Egidio Perfetti, say they introduced chewing gum to Italy by selling Brooklyn, "the bridge gum."
