Briet (bridal diet)
The word “briet” (for “bridal diet”) was popularized just before the April 29, 2011 wedding of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, and Catherine “Kate” Middleton. The media noted Middleton’s dramatic weight loss and commented on the bride’s “briet.”
“Briet—Bridal Diet” had been used on Anne’s Bridal Blog on July 20, 2009, but “briet” was otherwise rarely used before April 2011.
Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton
The wedding of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, and Catherine Middleton took place on Friday, 29 April 2011 at Westminster Abbey in London. Prince William, second in the line of succession to Queen Elizabeth II, first met Catherine Middleton in 2001, whilst both were studying at the University of St Andrews. Their engagement on 20 October 2010 was announced on 16 November 2010. The build-up to the wedding and the occasion itself attracted much media attention, with the service being broadcast live around the world, and being compared and contrasted in many ways with the 1981 marriage of William’s parents, Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer. News outlets widely estimated that the wedding was watched by a global television audience of upwards of two billion people. 24.5 million watched the event in the UK.

According to some sources, Kate, or Catherine as she is now known, is aiming for a 23-inch waistline in time for her wedding day. A new term has even been coined especially for Kate’s pre-wedding regime - the ‘briet’. Geddit? Br-idal d-iet, put them together. Clever, eh
