Boroughite (inhabitant of a borough)

New York City was consolidated into five boroughs (Bronx. Brooklyn,  Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island) in 1898. A “boroughite” is, theoretically, an inhabitant of any borough, but the term was rarely used for the first 100 years. People identified as “New Yorkers” or with a particular borough, as expressed in such terms as “Brooklynite” and “Manhattanite.”

“Boroughite” has been cited in print since at least 1968, but became popular since about 2006. A “boroughite” usually refers to an inhabitant of the “outer boroughs”—that is, someone who’s not from Manhattan. A headline in New York magazine on December 15, 2013, mentioned “Hack-Starved Outer-Boroughites.”

Wikipedia: City of Greater New York
The City of Greater New York was the unofficial term for the expanded City of New York created on January 1, 1898 by consolidating the existing City of New York with the eastern Bronx, Brooklyn, most of Queens County, and Staten Island. The section of the Bronx west of the Bronx River had been annexed to the City and County of New York in 1874, and was known as the Annexed District. In the years leading up to consolidation, City of Brooklyn had expanded by annexing all of the other towns and cities in Kings County. Only the western part of Queens County was part of the consolidation plan. In 1899, its three eastern towns separated to form the new Nassau County.

It would be easy here, too, to leave World Yacht dining to the tourists, the gray- haired ladies in polyester pantsuits, the muster of lapanese, the middle-aged boroughites, and such incurable romantics as the several months’ pregnant young and her mate holding hands at the window as we sweep past Wall Street.

I was hoping you Manhattanites (and other borough-ites) would make me feel like that was nothing. Hello? Anyone? Where are all the people paying zillions in NYC? I know you’re out there…:) LOL!
Oh well. I love my place! I’m in a new building in downtown Washington, D.C., with 2 br, 2.5 ba.

He’s a white guy from Queens ...
You, of course, remember that Archie Bunker was from Queens.

‘Nuf said.

Disclaimer: I currently live in Queens and my “white guy” husband was born and raised in Astoria and makes fun of the knee jerk racism of many of his fellow “boroughites”.
