Bolts (Brooklyn FXFL football team)

The Brooklyn Bolts became one of four teams to open the Fall Experimental Football League (FXFL), a professional football minor league, in 2014. The team name of “Brooklyn Bolts” was filed for a trademark on August 7, 2014. The Bolts opened the season on October 15, 2014.

The “Bolt” name is possibly a tribute to Coney Island’s Thunderbolt roller coaster.

Brooklyn Bolts: Pro football is coming to Brooklyn
AUGUST 29, 2014 | BY ROB ABRUZZESE
Brooklyn Bolts will be the borough’s first pro football team since 1946
Brooklyn is getting it’s very own professional football team. Unfortunately, it won’t be an NFL team, but starting this fall MCU Park in Coney Island will host the Brooklyn Bolts, a team in the newly formed Fall Experimental Football League (FXFL).

“New York is an important market to us for several reasons,” FXFL Founder and Commissioner Brian Woods told Peter Schwartz of CBS New York. “Number one, for the media presence. And, obviously, the partnership with the Brooklyn Cyclones embodies our business model for this league.”

Bolts kick off football in Brooklyn with style — and a win
By Zach Braziller October 16, 2014 | 3:02am
There were long touchdown passes and special teams scores, big hits and several lead changes. The Fall Experimental Football League (FXFL) made its Brooklyn debut Wednesday night and delivered on its promise of exciting, albeit occasionally sloppy, football.

The announced crowd of 1,393 at MCU Park — giving the game a high school or Division II feel — saw the Bolts win their first game, 27-20 over the Boston Brawlers, at the home of the Brooklyn Cyclones, the Mets’ Single-A affiliate.

Team’s Debut Brings a Friendly, ‘Minor-League’ Football Experience to Cyclones’ MCU Park

More than 1,300 people bought tickets for Wednesday night’s game between the Brooklyn Bolts and the Boston Brawlers at MCU Park in Coney Island, and it is unlikely that many of them could recall the last time professional football was played in Brooklyn. That is because it hadn’t happened since the 1940s, when the All-America Football Conference’s Brooklyn Dodgers called Ebbets Field home.

But when the Bolts beat the Brawlers 27-20 in the Fall Experimental Football League’s second-ever game, it did kindle memories for at least one fan. Alvin Hirschberg, who grew up on Manhattan’s east side in the 1940s, remembers going to football games at Ebbets Field. He would make the trips with his uncle, who took him to baseball games, football games and occasionally a local burlesque club. (They told people they were going to the movies).
