“Bluegrass is music sung from the heart,  through the nose”

“Bluegrass music. Sung from the heart through the nose” is a jocular one-liner that has been printed on T-shirts and bumper stickers. “Country used to be songs sung from the heart and through the nose” was written by American newspaper columnist and humorist Lewis Grizzard (1946-1994) in 1984. “Bluegrass Music: Sung From The Heart, Through The Nose” was cited in print in 1991.

15 May 1984, Morning Advocate (Baton Rouge, LA), “Country music going through a change” by Lewis Grizzard, pg. 11-B, col. 4:
Country used to be songs sung from the heart and through the nose, songs about lost loves and such values as learning to be humble, as in “Take a Cold Tater and Wait” and “Sleepin’ at the Foot of the Bed.”

“There’s a bumper sticker that says, ‘bluegrass music: from the heart through the nose,’ but they don’t have some of that traditional bluegrass twanginess,” Howard said.

Fletcher Bright and The Dismembered Tennesseans – Black Tie and Bluegrass

To know Fletcher Bright is to love him. The Chattanooga entrepreneur has had a side career playing fiddle with the Dismembered Tennesseans for over fifty years—with the same banjo player, Ed “Doc” Cullis. You have to appreciate a man whose band T-shirts read: Bluegrass music. Sung from the heart through the nose.
