Big Pineapple (San José, Costa Rica nickname)

San José, Costa Rica is sometimes called "the Big Pineapple." I was there and never heard this, but it's in some tourist literature so it's gotta be true.

Wikipedia: San José, Costa Rica
San José (Spanish: [saŋ xoˈse]; literally meaning "Saint Joseph") is the capital and largest city of Costa Rica, and the capital of the province of the same name. It is located in the centre of the country, specifically in the mid-west of the Central Valley, and contained within San José Canton. San José is the seat of national government, the focal point of political and economic activity, and the major transportation hub of Costa Rica.

Why do we call San Jose "the Big Pineapple?" Because, unbeknownst to most travel writers and map-makers, the city streets and avenues of Costa Rica's capital are laid out in the shape of a giant pineapple. Yes, another one of those little-known facts about Costa Rica that we ran across in the classic but out-of-print book, The Secret History of Costa Rica by Moe Wright IX.
