Big Apple (roller coaster at Astroland, Brooklyn, 1977-2008)

Astroland amusement park opened in Coney Island in 1962 and closed in 2008. One kiddie ride from 1977 until 2008 was the “Big Apple Coaster.” People rode a worm coaster that went in and out of the big apple.

A similar “Big Apple” roller coaster is the Big Apple at Great Yarmouth Pleasure Beach in Norfolk, England—one of several “Big Apple”/“Wacky Worm” roller coasters in the UK.

Another “Big Apple” roller coaster is the Big Apple Coaster at the New York-New York Hotel and Casino at Las Vegas, Nevada.

Astroland is the successor to the many amusement areas that made Coney Island famous.

There are 10 rides, including the Tilt-Swings, Water-Fume, Double Diving Bell and the Enterprise, plus a giant amusement area for children with 15 featured rides. Top attraction is the kiddie roller coaster, the “Big Apple,” which is claimed to be a one-of-a-kind item.

Moving on to the rest of Astroland:
>[...] I settled for the milder pleasures of the Wacky Worm. (Is

>this the generic term for this ride? I saw that somebody else called it
>the Big Apple.)

Astroland’s name for it is the Big Apple Coaster. It has a somewhat- inconspicuous sign in front of it; it also goes by that name on their web site (http://www.astroland.com). Wacky Worm is the manufacturer’s (whose? I don’t know) name for the ride, I guess. Our ITOT on one of the trains was truly memorable. 😊

7. Big Apple, Astroland (the sight of a train nearly full of grown-ups on that thing was very very amusing)

This is the Big Apple coaster at Luna Park, Coney Island in New York - it is one of only two I have seen with a turntable, which allows one train to be loaded whilst the other is operating. Enjoy the ride.
