Big Apple Meat Market, 575 Ninth Ave. (between 41st and 42d Sts.) 563-2555—A warehouse-style butcher shop, supermarket and cold cut counter in one. The walk-in meat vaults, with bargain prices on family-size cuts, are the store’s most popular spot. You’ll find every meat shank and innard you can imagine: lamp chops ($2.89/pound), goat legs ($1.58/pound), whole fresh hams (98 cents/pound), beef kidneys (98 cents/pound), filet mignon ($4.58/pound) and chicken breasts ($1.48/pound). Meat is custom-cut all day long at no additional charge.

23 September 2010, New York (NY) Times, “Trimming the Fat Off Prices: Neighborhood Joint” by Niko Koppel,  pg. CT3, cols. 1-2:
THE Big Apple Meat Market, on the Port Authority bus terminal’s western flank, lures chefs and those who watch their pennies with London broil and filet mignon for a fraction of the prices charged elsewhere — $2.88 and $5.98 a pound, respectively. It is a giant walk-in fridge of a store, where meat hooks and rails hang from the ceiling.

Established in 1992, Big Apple occupies a storefront on Ninth Avenue between 41st and 42nd Streets that used to belong to Washington Beef, which packed and sold meat wholesale for more than 60 years. The store’s manager, Pat Maddalena, 65, stands sentry six days a week — he takes Sundays off, though the store is open 7:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. — in a deli coat, a stoic white-haired presence overseeing orange checkout counters worn from the constant stream of customers.

Big Apple Meat Market
We’ve been hearing rumors about this for awhile and now it’s happening. After more than 20 years in Hell’s Kitchen, right behind the Port Authority bus terminal, the Big Apple Meat Market is closing. The good news is, they’re moving to a new space a couple blocks away.

Hell’s Yeah NYC got a shot of the goodbye signage and points to what’s coming—the Times Square Hotel, a 38-story glass tower “consisting of 440 micro luxury guestrooms.” Yes, “micro luxury.” Click here for a look at the giant glass tower to come—it appears to be taking the entire block with it.

HELL’S KITCHEN — Gabriella Lopez had a few moments of panic when she pulled her shopping cart up to the Big Apple Meat Market and realized it was closed.

Lopez was one of many in the neighborhood who were shocked at the market’s apparent closure — then relieved to hear that the shop would reopen within a month just a few blocks down Ninth Avenue.

The no-frills Big Apple Meat Market, sitting in the shadow of the Port Authority Bus Terminal at 575 Ninth Ave., has long been a neighborhood staple.

Living in New York’s Unloved Neighborhood
A nameless section of Manhattan resembles the nineteen-seventies city that’s been romanticized in the movies. But do we really want to live in “Taxi Driver”?

By Rivka Galchen

For ten years, I have lived in a neighborhood defined by the Port Authority Bus Station to the north, Penn Station to the south, the Lincoln Tunnel to the west, and, to the east, a thirty-one-foot stainless-steel sculpture of a needle threaded through a fourteen-foot button.

Until recently, there were dusty and tattered pennant banners announcing the “Grand Opening” of the Big Apple Meat Market on Ninth Avenue, a market that had been open for at least twenty years. I used to see very good-looking, well-dressed people getting professional photos taken there. Also sometimes at an abandoned lot nearby. The photographers have had to location-scout again, however, as the market was torn down not long ago and replaced with a tall and as yet unoccupied glass building. The community complained about the loss of the Big Apple market, where you could buy a gallon of mayonnaise and cheap hot food, so a new, affordable home has been found for the store, a couple of blocks south, though there are no banners or “Grand Opening” sign. I am what I am: I have grown into an adult who likes pumpernickel bread and red cabbage, but there were years when my partner’s young sons longed for Eggo waffles and bacon and Campbell’s chicken soup, and Big Apple was there for us.
