“Big Apple” is a song written and performed by the British band Kajagoogoo. Released in September 1983, it was the first single to be taken from the band’s second album Islands (1984), and their first song without lead singer Limahl, who had been fired from the band earlier that year. From this single onwards, lead vocals were performed by bassist Nick Beggs.

The song became the group’s fourth Top 20 hit in the United Kingdom, peaking at number eight (though was less successful in the United States, where the band are still considered to be a one-hit wonder).

Kajagoogoo are a British pop band, best known for their first single, “Too Shy”, which reached Number 1 in the UK Singles Chart, and Number 5 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, in 1983. The single was produced by Duran Duran’s keyboardist Nick Rhodes, and by Colin Thurston, Duran Duran’s in-house producer at the time.

As success came, tensions began to rise in the band, which eventually culminated in Limahl being fired by the other band members in 1983, with Beggs then taking over as lead singer. The first single by the new four-piece Kajagoogoo was “Big Apple”, which made the Top Ten, in late 1983.

Song of the Day: ‘Big Apple’ by KajaGooGoo
First single the band recorded after firing “Too Shy” singer Limhal. I’ve always loved the album it came from (“Islands”) but only recently saw this video—MTV never showed it—which features lots of wonderful footage of ‘80s NYC.
