THEE Hudson Valley BIG APPLES
New York City has many nicknames, but its most popular one is “The Big Apple”.
The Big Apples is an identity centered on celebrating the state of New York and all that it has to offer. Not only does it pay tribute to the nickname of New York City, the Big Apple, but also to New York State’s apple farming and agricultural life. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, New York is the second-largest producer of apples in the nation, and ranks in the top ten in production of 30 commodities.
The Big Apples logo features a smiling red apple mascot, named Empire – a nod to New York’s status as the Empire State and to the popular apple variety developed at Cornell University in the 1940s. Empire is holding the torch of the Statue of Liberty in one hand while wearing a red foam finger on the left. The logo also prominently features the navy blue and gold colors of the New York state flag.

‘Big Apples’ alternate identity makes Yankees’ affiliate New York to the core
November 15th, 2024
Benjamin Hill @BensBiz
The Hudson Valley Renegades, seeking to celebrate core aspects of their home state, planted a seed that has now borne fruit. At a gala event on Friday morning, the New York Yankees’ High-A affiliate unveiled their “Big Apples” alternate identity.
New York state is the second-largest producer of apples in the nation, and the Hudson Valley region is home to a preponderance of apple orchards. In this regard, Big Apples is a natural complement to the Renegades’ prior local food-themed identity, the Cider Donuts. Of course, Big Apples is also a tribute to the Big Apple itself, New York City, located approximately 100 miles south of the Hudson Valley.

The Renegades will play as the Big Apples on three occasions in 2025—July 26, Aug. 15 and Sept. 4—modeling logos and uniforms designed by San Diego-based Brandiose. The Big Apple depicted in the primary logo is named Empire, referencing New York’s nickname as well as a variety of apples first derived within the state. Empire carries the Statue of Liberty’s torch in his left hand and wears a giant foam finger on his right. The logo is incorporated into a blue and gold color scheme modeled after the colors of the New York state flag.

If this replaces the “Cider Donuts” then I hate it. The “Big Apple” is NYC, the “Cider Donut’s” are the Hudson Valley.

The “Coder Donuts” is the alternate identity. Why do we need another one? The “Big Apples” sounds like we play in Manhattan. The cider donut is iconic to upstate NY and the Hudson Valley. I vote “No”.
