“Be kind to people. Not because they’re nice, but because you are” is a saying that has been printed on many images. The saying means to be kind,whether it is appreciated or not.

Ed Sabol (1916-2015), a co-founder of NFL FIlms, probably said it on the NFL Network. He did not say it in his induction speech to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on August 6, 2011.

Do nice things for people…
Not because of who they are,
Or what you might get in return,
But because of who you are.
Kindness is not a transaction.
It is not a strategy.
It is not something you give
with one eye on the reward.
It is a reflection.
