Wikipedia: Barista
A barista (/bəˈriːstə, -ˈrɪstə/; Italian: [baˈrista]; from the Italian for “bartender”) is a person, usually a coffeehouse employee, who prepares and serves espresso-based coffee drinks. In Starbucks, over the counter employees are referred to as “baristas”, although the preparation process is fully automated.

To tip or not to tip

Complicated? Did I bring about this complicated situation by putting out that tip-jar in the first place? To answer you question, this is not calculus, it a rough formula derived from my sub-conscious tipping trends. In short, if I knew for certain the barista/baristo (why is the latter is never used in describing a male espresso wizard?) was making a decent living wage, the primary motivator of my dropping spare change in the tip jar would be gone!.....MSP

To my mind, “barista” is female; “baristo” would be male.

Starbucks/all coffee houses:  Call a male server a “baristo.”  A “barista” is a female.  It’s the same with Bimbo/Bimba.  Ask the Italians.

The word “baristo” is sometimes used as a male version of barista. However, that’s a case of hypercorrection. The word “barista” is gender-neutral.
