Bananageddon (banana + Armageddon)

“Bananageddon” (banana + Armageddon) is a term to describe a shortage of bananas. “Bananageddon” was the name of a computer game and was cited on Twitter in December 2008. “Bananageddon is what happens when banana crops are threatened or wiped out” was cited in the

The December 2013 news article titled “Banana-geddon: World’s bananas under threat from bugs and spreading fungus” and the April 2014 news article titled “Bananageddon: Millions face hunger as deadly fungus Panama disease decimates global banana crop” both popularized the term.

Bananageddon
Bananageddon is what happens when banana crops are threatened or wiped out, driving up the price of bananas significantly and decreasing the banana smoothie/bread happiness quota in the world. This could be as a result of floods, cyclones or the disease that is plaguing a good portion of the world’s crops.
Cyclone Yeti has wiped out most of far north Queensland’s banana crops. Bananageddon is near!

BANANAGEDDON

Mmm, don’t know about you, but when I open a pack of bananas I love it when HUNDREDS OF VENOMOUS BRAZILIAN SPIDERS crawl out of it. Well that’s what happened to Consi Taylor, who was all set to dig into a healthy snack when she noticed some ‘funny little spots’ on the bananas she’d bought from Sainsbury’s.

On closer inspection, she realised that the spots were actually spiders, which started hatching out and having an eight-legged Brazilian spider carnival on her kitchen table.

Banana-geddon: World’s bananas under threat from bugs and spreading fungus
Published December 18, 2013 news.com.au
One country has already declared it a national emergency and alarm bells are ringing for banana lovers.

But banana-geddon is very real and fruit fans everywhere are fearing for the future supplies of the popular global snack.

Already under massive threat due to plagues of bugs, scientists now fear a fungal infection could be making its way around the world and into banana plantations.

Fears are also growing that the Foc-TR4 strain could wipe out Cavendish cultivar banana exports across the whole of Latin American and the Caribbean, which accounts for more than 80 per cent of the world’s supply.

Bananageddon: Millions face hunger as deadly fungus Panama disease decimates global banana crop
CAHAL MILMO Author Biography CHIEF REPORTER Friday 04 April 2014
Scientists have warned that the world’s banana crop, worth £26 billion and a crucial part of the diet of more than 400 million people, is facing “disaster” from virulent diseases immune to pesticides or other forms of control.

Alarm at the most potent threat – a fungus known as Panama disease tropical race 4 (TR4) – has risen dramatically after it was announced in recent weeks that it has jumped from South-east Asia, where it has already devastated export crops, to Mozambique and Jordan.
