Apple at the foot of the Statue of Liberty (2024)
A statue called “The Lucifer of Liège” (1848), in Liège, Belgium, is a religious sculpture executed in white marble by the Belgian artist Guillaume Geefs. New York City’s “Statue of Liberty” was installed in 1886. According to a May 13, 2024 TikTok video by fittestflatearther, the latter statue borrows an “apple” idea from the former.
“The Lucifer of Liège” shows the subject with a foot in chains, and an apple (the forbidden fruit) with bite marks also at the angel’s feet. The Statue of Liberty also shows its subject with a foot in chains, but this is meant to signify America breaking free of the chains of slavery. The Statue of Liberty, however, does not have an apple.
“The Big Apple” is a nickname for New York City that became popular in horse racing in the 1920s. The nickname has nothing to do with the Statue of Liberty (1886). The fact that there is an apple in the statue “The Lucifer of Liège” (1848) is not relevant at all to New York City’s nickname of the “Big Apple.”

Know in English as the “Lucifer of Liège,” its actual title is “Le génie du mal”—“The Genius of Evil.” It was carved by Belgian sculptur Guillaume Geefs in 1848, and it depicts a tortured yet beautiful young man. As idealized as his image is, he is actually a replacement of another Lucifer carved by Guillaume’s younger brother Joseph a few years prior. Joseph’s sculpture, “L’ange du mal” (or “The Angel of Evil”), was installed in the Cathedral in 1842, but church officials thought that his depiction was too beautiful and a bad influence on the church youth, so his big brother Guillaume was commissioned to come up with a replacement statue that wasn’t so … distracting.
It might be easy to mistake the Lucifer of Liège for one of the saints that ring the front of the pulpit, where Peter, Paul, Hubert, and Lambert reside. But the details reveal his true identity—the curved walls at his sides are bat wings, the apple at his feet has been bitten, his chained toes are sharp like claws, and small yet tell-tale horns emerge from beneath his hair.

No apple is attached to the chain on the Statue of Liberty; it symbolizes the end of slavery. NYC’s “Big Apple” nickname comes from 1920s horseracing and jazz, not the statue. You might’ve misinterpreted an image—historical records show no apple in the design.
