“Anyone who says money can’t buy happiness doesn’t know where to shop”

“Money can’t buy happiness” is a proverb that has been cited in English since at least 1821. “Anyone who says money can’t buy happiness doesn’t know where to shop” is a popular saying that has been printed on many images.

The “All About Eva” episode of the American television sitcom Gilligan’s Island, written by Joanna Lee (1931-2003) that first aired on December 12, 1966, contained this exchange:

Professor (played by Russell Johnson) — “Well, I’m sorry folks, but money doesn’t buy happiness!”
Mrs. Howell (played by Natalie Schafer)—“Anyone who says money doesn’t buy happiness doesn’t know where to shop.”

Authorship of the humorous saying has often been credited to Gertrude Stein (1874-1946), but there’s no evidence that she ever said it. Actress Bo Derek was given authorship credit in the 1980s, but it appears likely that the saying had already been in widespread use. Tom Shivers was given authorship credit in 1992 and Gittel Hudnick in 2001, but there’s no documented evidence that either one coined or even popularized the saying.

Another popular variation of the proverb has been “Money can’t buy happiness; it can, however, rent it.”
