“An etymologist, an entomologist, and an etiologist walk into a bar…” (bar joke)

“A guy walks into a bar…” is a typical form of what has been called the “bar joke.” People often confuse an “entomologist” (a scientist who studies insects) with an “etymologist” (one who studies the origins of words) or an “etiologist” (one who studies causes, such as in as in philosophy, biology or physics). “An etymologist and an entomologist walk into a bar. The etymologist knows which one he is” was posted on Twitter on July 17, 2014. “An entomologist, etymologist, and antimologist walk into a bar. The bartender, not realizing this, says ‘what can I get for you?’” was posted on Twitter on February 2, 2016.

An etymologist, an entomologist, and an etiologist walk into a bar.
submitted June 16, 2018 by etymologynerd
“What’ll it be?” The bartender asks.
“I’ll have a beer,” the etymologist says. “A word which comes from Latin bibere, meaning “to drink”.
“I’ll have a Campari,” the entomologist says. “It was originally dyed with crushed beetles!”
The bartender gets them their drinks. “And for you, sir?” he asks the third man.
“I’m just wondering how I got here,” the etiologist replies.
