“An amnesiac walks into a bar…” (bar joke)

“A guy walks into a bar…” is a typical form of what has been called the “bar joke.” A popular version includes a variation of a classic pick-up line:

“An amnesiac walks into a bar. He goes up to a beautiful blonde and says, ‘Do I come here often?’”

Originally, this was just a pick-up line joke. “Hi. I suffer from amnesia. Do I come here often?” was cited on newsgroups in 1996 under the heading “267 pick up lines.” In 2004, the “So tell me, do I come here often?” punchline was said by an elderly man and the joke became very popular among seniors.

The “amnesiac walks into a bar” joke was cited in print in 2006.

A very elderly gentleman, (mid nineties) very well dressed, hair well groomed, great looking suit, flower in his lapel smelling slightly of a good after shave, presenting a well looked after image, walks into an upscale cocktail lounge. Seated at the bar is an elderly looking lady, (mid eighties).

The gentleman walks over, sits along side of her, orders a drink, takes a sip, turns to her and says, “So tell me, do I come here often?”
