American Riviera
Both California and Florida have claimed the title of “American Riviera” from as far back as the 1890s.
7 November 1892, Los Angeles Times, pg. 9:
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA.

THE AMERICAN RIVIERA.
Many of the residences and gardens in Los Angeles will compare favorably in beauty of appearance with the delightful villas and well-kept grounds which cluster along the French and Italian Rivieras.
28 January 1893, Christian Union, “On the American Riviera” by James Duane Squires, pg. 159:
Following so distinguished an authority, it will not seem a California assumption to speak of an “American Riviera.” From Point Conception to San Diego the shore-line makes a broad, graceful curve of two hundred and fifty miles. Starting and ending at the same points, the mountains make a deeper curve, extending seventy-five miles back from the sea at the deepest part of the curve. Here is “Our Riviera.” The watering-places of Santa Barbara, Coronado, Redondo, and Santa Monica are already widely known and thronged by thousands from every part of the world.
25 December 1894, Atlanta Constitution, pg. 3:
LOW RATES TO FLORIDA.
The Central Railroad Will Run
Through Sleepers to Palm Beach.
A few years ago the winter tourist’s objective point was Jacksonville or St. Augustine. A little later tourists went to Tampa. The last year or two the tide of winter travel has turned to Palm Beach, away down on the east coast. The completion of Mr. Flagler’s palatial new hotel, the Royal Poinciana, has made Lake Worth a resort so popular that it has been well named the American Riviera.
1 February 1896, The Critic, “Dixie,” pg. 75:
Souther Scene and Sketches. By Julian Ralph. Illustrated. Harper & Bros.
THIS BEAUTIFUL book, illustrated by a number of well-known artists, records a bright and sympathetic pilgrimage down the Mississippi from St. Louis to New Orleans, on an old-fashioned steamboat; along the Teche in Louisiana and the sunny sound of Mississippi; the American Riviera (Florida); the industrial settlements in Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee; Charleston and the Carolinas; the national capitol, and new St. Louis.
