“All people are born alike—except Republicans and Democrats”

“All people are born alike—except Republicans and Democrats” is a jocular saying that has been printed on many images. New York City-born comedian, writer, actor and game show host Groucho Marx (1890-1977) made the remark on his television quiz show You Bet Your Life.

This television preview for Thursday, December 16, 1954, was printed in that day’s The Evening Sun (Baltimore, MD), with a similar preview in many other newspapers:

“YOU BET YOUR LIFE, Groucho talks to a jewelry salesman who admits he buys his own products. Groucho comments that if he works real hard he can build up his business to a shoestring. There’s also a reverend and his wife who’ve adopted a dozen children of different nationalities. Groucho agrees with them—‘that all people are born alike—except Republicans and Democrats, of course.’ Groucho in his usual good form, KPTV.”
