In the biblical story (Genesis 2:16-17) of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, God commanded them not to eat the forbidden fruit, but they disobeyed the command and ate it. The forbidden fruit was not specified as an apple, but it has been an apple in most representations of the story. A joke has it that if Adam and Eve failed with an ordinary apple, imagine if it had been a food that’s really tempting and addicting!

In Abrahamic religions, forbidden fruit is a name given to the fruit growing in the Garden of Eden that God commands mankind not to eat. In the Biblical story of Genesis, Adam and Eve disobey God and commit the original sin, eating the forbidden fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and are exiled from Eden:
