“A tradition unlike any other” (The Masters golf tournament)
The Augusta (GA) National Golf Club is home to The Masters golf tournament. The slogan of “A Tradition Unlike Any Other” was trademarked in 2015, with a first use in 1989.
CBS television broadcaster Jim Nantz is frequently credited with coining “A Tradition Unlike Any Other” in 1986. When asked about the tagline in 2016, Nantz also credited Doug Towey of CBS Sports.
“The Masters, the one sporting event with, as Jack Nicklaus says, ‘a tradition like no other’” was cited in print in April 1983. “Sunday’s final round provided entertainment at its best and solidified the Masters as a ‘tradition unlike any other’” was cited in print in April 1986.
Wikipedia: Masters Tournament
The Masters Tournament, also known as The Masters or The US Masters, is one of the four major championships in professional golf. Scheduled for the first full week of April, it is the first of the majors to be played each year. Unlike the other major championships, the Masters is held each year at the same location, Augusta National Golf Club, a private golf club in the city of Augusta, Georgia, USA. The Masters was started by Clifford Roberts and Bobby Jones. Jones designed Augusta National with course architect Alister MacKenzie. The tournament is an official money event on the PGA Tour, the European Tour, and the Japan Golf Tour. The field of players is smaller than those of the other major championships because it is an invitational event, held by the Augusta National Golf Club.

Gone, too, are Sam Snead, Byron Nelson, Gene Sarazen, and so many others whom I came to look forward to seeing at Augusta in the spring and who made the Masters, in the words of the incomparable Jim Nantz of CBS Sports, “a tradition unlike any other.”

Augusta National files for trademarks of ‘A Tradition Unlike Any Other’
Darren Rovell and Bob Harig
It was broadcaster Jim Nantz who first said it, but it’s Augusta National that has filed to trademark it.
The club filed for two trademarks to Nantz’s familiar phrase “A Tradition Unlike Any Other” in September.
One trademark that would tie the mark to the Masters asserts that Augusta National’s first use of it came in 1989. It is believed Nantz first used it leading up to his first Masters broadcast in 1986.

After 30 years, Jim Nantz reveals the source of his most famous Masters catchphrase
By Alex Myers
(...)
During the second half of Thursday night’s NCAA Tournament game between Kansas and Maryland, Hill, who was broadcasting the game with Nantz and Bill Raftery, posed the question after Nantz read a promo for the upcoming tournament. (Side note: The Masters is now less than two weeks away!). “Jim, did you coin that?” Hill asked after Nantz said the familiar phrase.
“You know, it’s been around for a long time,” Nantz responded. “There was a legend at CBS named Doug Towey, who also was the same guy who had a big hand in ‘One Shining Moment,’ and we miss him. He passed away a few years ago. He was a great man.”
So does that mean Towey coined the phrase? Or was it a collaborative effort? Either way, Nantz makes it seem like Towey was involved. And he’s definitely a legend.
