“A libertarian is a Republican who smokes pot”

“A libertarian is a Republican/Conservative who smokes pot” is a frequently told political joke. American anarchist writer Bob Black spoke in 1984 on “The Libertarian as Conservative,” saying:

“A libertarian is just a Republican who takes drugs.”

“A libertarian is a republican who smokes pot” was cited in print in 1998 and is probably the most popular form of the saying.

I am hard put to find something to say to people who still think libertarianism has something to do with liberty. A libertarian is just a Republican who takes drugs.

I agreed to come here today to speak on some such subject as “The Libertarian as Conservative.” To me this is so obvious that I am hard put to find something to say to people who still think libertarianism has something to do with liberty. A libertarian is just a Republican who takes drugs.

You know the old wisdom:
A republican is a democrat who got mugged.
A democrat is a republican who lost her job.
A libertarian is a republican who got out of bed one day, didn’t like what he saw, and went on a ten month pot rampage.

...the blog at Reason, where consumers who have some lingering doubts about going full wingnut can get their talking points in the “libertarian” flavor. In advertising, they call this a niche market.

A popular joke has it that “a libertarian is a Republican who smokes pot.” That may or may not extend to the Tea Party, which is made up of several different conservative strands and includes many people, especially social conservatives, who would oppose legalization.

Michael Hamilton is a libertarian writer living in Washington, D.C. His main interests are economics, drug legalization, immigration, and land-use policy.
It’s common to hear libertarians pejoratively referred to as “Republicans who smoke pot,” the idea being that libertarians don’t really favor freedom in areas where it would lead to outcomes they do not like. For the most part this is false.
