“A hangover is when you open your eyes in the morning and wish you hadn’t”

“A hangover is when you open your eyes in the morning and wish you hadn’t” is a jocular saying that has been included in many quotation collections that describe hangovers. “A hangover—that’s when you open your eyes in the morning, and wish you hadn’t” was cited in print in March 1957 and credited to Al Hibbler (1915-2001), an American baritone vocalist.

The saying is most often credited to Andy Capp (a British comic strip created by cartoonist Reg Smythe), but that comic strip began in August 1957—after Hibbler had already been credited for saying it.

Wikipedia: Al Hibbler
Albert George “Al” Hibbler (August 16, 1915 – April 24, 2001) was an American baritone vocalist, who sang with Duke Ellington’s orchestra before having several pop hits as a solo artist. Some of Hibbler’s singing is classified as rhythm and blues, but he is best classified as a bridge between R&B and traditional pop music. According to one authority, “Hibbler cannot be regarded as a jazz singer but as an exceptionally good interpreter of twentieth-century popular songs who happened to work with some of the best jazz musicians of the time.”
