“A gyro is a Greek taco” (“A gyro is a lamb taco”)

The Greek “gyro” (meat wrapped in a pita) has been compared to the Mexican “taco” (meat—or some other filling—wrapped in a tortilla). “Greek taco—a gyro” was printed in a 1976 newspaper.

PH}it was a lot easier to find donner kabob in Turkey than it was to find gyros in Greece!

I don’t remember whether they were called gyros (a word I learned during my last visit to New York), but what to me was a Greek taco was available on almost every block in the central plazas in small towns and all over downtown Athens. They were delilcious.

The meat, lamb?, was rotated on a vertical spit.
