“The only communists left are in China, Cuba, North Korea and on American universities”

After the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991-92, there was a joke that the only communists left in the world could be found in China, Cuba, North Korea, and on American university campuses. The joke appears to date in print to at least 1992 and is of unknown authorship.

Wikipedia: Soviet Union
The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR, Russian: Сою́з Сове́тских Социалисти́ческих Респу́блик, tr. Soyuz Sovietskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik IPA: [sɐˈjus sɐˈvʲetskʲɪx sətsɨəlʲɪˈstʲitɕɪskʲɪx rʲɪsˈpublʲɪk], abbreviated СССР, SSSR), and commonly known as the Soviet Union (Russian: Советский Союз, tr. Sovietsky Soyuz) was a constitutionally socialist state that existed in Eurasia between 1922 and 1991. A more informal name also used among its residents was the Union (Soyuz).

The Soviet Union had a single-party political system dominated by the Communist Party until 1990. Although the USSR was nominally a union of Soviet republics (15 in all after 1956) with the capital in Moscow, it was actually a highly centralized state with a planned economy.

15 June 1992, St. Louis (MO) Post-Dispatch, “Quayle’s Attack Hits With Most, Misses With Some In Illinois GOP” by Patrick E. Gauen, pg. 1B:
As for teachers, Weber said: ‘’I think the only communists left are on the faculties.’’

Now the only Communists left are China, Cuba and the mainstream media in the USA.

Free Republic
The irony, of course, is that the only communists left to celebrate their victory are in Cuba, North Korea and on a bunch of university campuses.

That so?
Editor, Daily News:
In a letter published Saturday , D.M. Miller identified Cuba, Venezuela and American college faculties as the only communists left in the world.

Faculty at American colleges are not communists. They may not have a viewpoint that is as right-wing as one would like, but, in a democracy, they are entitled to their beliefs.
